Hadith No 2- Kitaab Bad-ul-Wahi( كتاب بدء الوحى) Bukhaari Shareef (Ahaadees Mubaarkah)

Narrated 'Aisha: (the mother of the faithful believers) Al-Harith bin Hisham asked Allah's Apostle "O Allah's Apostle! How is the Divine Inspiration revealed to you?" Allah's Apostle replied, "Sometimes it is (revealed) like the ringing of a bell, this form of Inspiration is the hardest of all and then this state passes off after I have grasped what is inspired. Sometimes the Angel comes in the form of a man and talks to me and I grasp whatever he says." 'Aisha added: Verily I saw the Prophet being inspired divinely on a very cold day and noticed the sweat dropping from his forehead (as the Inspiration was over).

Muhammad's first revelation was an event described in Islamic tradition as taking place in AD 610, during which the Islamic prophet Muhammad was visited by the angel Gabriel, who revealed to him the beginnings of what would later become the Qur'an. The event took place in a cave called Hira, located on the mountain Jabal an-Nour near Mecca. It is not mentioned anywhere when was the exact date and time of the revelation but according to Mubarakpuri, the exact date of this event was Monday, the 21st of Ramadan just before sunrise, i.e. August 10, 610 C.E. – when Muhammad was 40 lunar years, 6 months and 12 days of age, i.e. 39 solar years, 3 months and 22 days.

How did the Prophet Muhammad receive revelation? According to his wife `A’ishah, the Prophet used to go in seclusion in the cave of Hiraa’ outside Makkah, where he used to worship God continuously for many days.

One day, an angel came to him and asked him to read. The Prophet, who was illiterate, replied, “I do not know how to read.” The Prophet related the incident: The angel caught me forcibly and pressed me so hard that I could not bear it anymore. He then released me again and asked me to read and I replied, “I do not know how to read.” Thereupon he caught me again and pressed me a second time till I could not bear it anymore. He then released me and again asked me to read, but again I replied, “I do not know how to read” (or “What shall I read?”) Thereupon he caught me for the third time and pressed me, and then released me and said: [Read in the name of your Lord, who created, created man from a clot. Read! And your Lord is the most bountiful.]2

This happened in the year 610 CE, when the Prophet was 40 years old. During the 23 years from the revelation of these first verses, the Qur’an was revealed to the Prophet in stages. It was not revealed at one time for a number of reasons: to enable the natural and steady development of the community of believers by gradually implementing the laws of God; to meet the requirements of the changing conditions and needs of that community; and to facilitate easy absorption and memorization of the Qur’an.

Quranic Reflection No. 522. Ayat 97:1 – Revelation of Quran on the Night of Qadr

Innā anzalnāhu fī laylatil qadr
Indeed, We sent it down during the Night of Decree
(Sūrat al-Qadr, Ayat 1)

Every Divine Scripture that was sent down to the Prophets of Allah ‘alayhimus-salam was sent down instantaneously; in other words, all at once with the full commands and expectations provided for the people to follow. For example, Allah ‘azza wajall says about Prophet Mūsā ‘alayhis-salām: And We wrote for him in the Tablets advice concerning all things and an elaboration of all things (Q 7:145).

Uniquely, the Holy Quran had two forms of revelation, gradual and instantaneous. The gradual revelation began on the 27th of Rajab, during the event known as al-Bi‘tha (the day of Divine commission) in the 40th year of Prophet Muhammad’s life, when the first few verses of Sura al-‘Alaq (No. 96) were revealed. This revelation lasted for 23 years till the end of the Prophet’s life.

The second form of revelation was the instantaneous one, which Allah describes in the verse being discussed: Indeed, We sent it down during the Night of Decree (Q 97:1). This revelation was different from the gradual revelation in that the whole Quran was revealed all at one time, unlike the 23 years it took to complete the gradual revelation.

Fundamentally, the Quran possesses another existence and reality, hidden        behinds its apparent form and far from ordinary sight and comprehension. The Quran, in its inner reality, is free from any kind of division and detail. It does not possess parts, chapters, and verses. Rather, it is a single reality, interconnected and firm (Quranic Sciences p.52).
